HISTORY

The “Diplomat Houses” were built in the early 1950’s in response to the request from the US Embassy’s Housing Department for suitable living quarters for its diplomats. Comprised of four (4) beautifully-designed period houses, these rental development sits in the Hilario Compound in a cul-de-sac along Peñafrancia Street in Paco Manila. Secured all around by high fences, each house in the compound is surrounded with flourishing fruit-bearing trees, lush gardens and wide open spaces. The Diplomat Houses are gems today, a glimpse into the beauty and grandeur of houses of the past, extremely rare finds in the midst of a bustling city.

“Updated and beautifully renovated”, the grandest of these Diplomat Houses, House 1229, is currently for rent. The architecture of the House 1229, mainly using Philippine hardwood “tanguile”, reflects the beauty and comfortable life of the 1950’s. Upon entering the house’s main gate, one is welcomed by a large, beautiful garden on the left with an abundance of trees, flowering plants and well-manicured lawn. At the end of the driveway, separate from the main house, is a covered carport, and right next to this are the living quarters for househelps.

Up the house’s (red concrete) entrance staircase is a wide, open space that can hold two living room areas and draws attention to an impressive staircase. A separate room to the left is the formal dining space (good for entertaining) that is connected to an enclosed kitchen. The updated kitchen can also be accessed from a separate back entrance to the house. The groundfloor is also provided with a visitor’s powder/bathroom for your guests’ convenience. Up the beautiful staircase on the second floor, are the master or primary bedroom, and two secondary rooms. The master bedroom is connected to a smaller room that can be converted into a study, a family room or nursery and has an ensuite bathroom. The secondary rooms, on the other hand, have easy access to another bathroom. Characteristic of the architecture of the 1950’s, all rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and big, wide windows that are great for natural air circulation, and fitted-out with large closets.

SURROUNDINGS/COMMUNITY

Peñafrancia St. is a mix of the old and new structures. There are still houses built in the 1950’s offered for rent. At its intersection with Quirino Avenue Extension is a Police Outpost. Along the street is a Kinder and High School for the Filipino-Chinese families. Also along the street is a 4 door townhouse, and ancestral homes of the Yulo Family and the Silva Family.

At the end of the street is a 5 Tower Manila Peninsula Garden Condominiums.

Nearby are St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, San Fernando de Dilao Catholic Church, an Aglipay Church, a Christian Church “Heritage”, Maria Goretti Church, a Public Library, Paco Health Center, Public High School “Manila Roxas” and Malayan High School. Several Fast Food Stores abound and Paco Market. Nearby are major hospitals, the Manila Doctors and Manila Medical Center. Major Universities e.g. Emilio Aguinaldo University and Adamson University. Shopping centers nearby are Robinsons Otis and Landers Superstore.
